Manchester United might have lost 1-0 to Arsenal at Old Trafford, but their performance gave fans plenty of reasons to feel optimistic.

An early mistake from goalkeeper Altay Bayindir gifted Arsenal the winner, yet what followed was a display full of energy, bravery, and attacking intent.
Despite the defeat, United looked more dynamic and direct than they have in a long time. The difference their summer signings made was clear. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo stretched Arsenal’s defence, while Mason Mount put in one of his sharpest displays in red. Even when Benjamin Sesko came on, you could sense there is more firepower still to come.

Manager Ruben Amorim stuck with his usual 3-4-2-1 formation, but the approach was much bolder this time. Wing-backs Diogo Dalot and Patrick Dorgu pushed high up the pitch, with Amad Diallo adding more attacking drive after coming on. United pressed aggressively, and although it left them vulnerable on the break at times, it stopped Arsenal from controlling the game as they usually do.
For once, it was United dictating the tempo. They recorded 22 shots, their most against Arsenal in over a decade, and dominated possession with more than 60%. The only thing missing was a goal. The front line looked dangerous throughout, and Arsenal’s defenders often found themselves retreating instead of stepping forward.
Of course, there are still flaws. United’s midfield balance remains a question, and Bayindir’s error underlined the ongoing uncertainty in goal. But these issues shouldn’t overshadow the progress on show. Compared to last season, when United often played cautiously against top teams, this was a far more confident and ambitious display.

Arsenal may have taken the points, but even their players admitted they were below their usual level. Bukayo Saka and David Raya both highlighted sloppy decision-making and mistakes. Mikel Arteta, while pleased with the win, noted that his players weren’t fully satisfied either—something that shows Arsenal’s growing standards.
For United, though, this match felt like a step forward. They played with belief, created chances, and showed signs that Amorim’s system is starting to click. If this is the foundation, then there’s plenty to build on. Results will matter, but performances like this suggest that United are moving in the right direction.
